Mars Colonization Project Under Way!

Mars Colonization Project Under Way!

Good Afternoon Everyone!

A few months ago, Team Awesome (that's our 7th grade teachers) started collaborating with Clarkson University regarding our Spring project called Mars Colonization.  Last week we began our "ramp-up" week where we filtered students through 7 different classrooms over 7 days teaching them a variety of things about Mars.  They learned about the soil, atmosphere, terrain, weather, what it takes to make a strong member of a crew being sent to Mars, nutrition, etc.

This past Monday we had our "kick-off" with Ben Baumgardner in his bright orange spacesuit speaking to the kids about the project and playing a video for them that Amanda and himself had made.  He also answered several questions from the audience.  Afterwards, students went to meet with their Corporation facilitators to learn more about what the project is about.  The driving question that all "corporations" or teams face is:  "How can we as a project team colonize and sustain life on Mars with a select group of people?"

A huge "Thank You" to Ben and Amanda for kick-starting our project!

Yesterday we had the opportunity to have a video conference with a gentleman named Lyle Tavernier from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California!  What an amazing 30 minutes we had!  The students were totally engaged the whole time Lyle spoke.  He gave us an overview of JPL and what they are working on presently.  He also gave the students some very interesting facts about Mars and the different types of Missions that they have completed.  We also had the chance to see lots of pictures of various rovers and the surface of Mars!

A huge "Thank You!" to Lyle and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory!
